The spontaneity of life on the streets

The thing that I enjoy most about shooting street photography is the sheer spontaneity of it. Much of the time it is an effort to get something decent or interesting. However, once in a while, interesting characters pop up, like in the images below. Also I like little interesting interactions between people, often situations that I have ‘setup’ by creative framing, rather than actual interactions between people. Still, it’s spotting those little moments that makes photography so intriguing for me.

I am not much for pre-planned or prepared working in photography, I much prefer to just see what happens. This is one of the reasons that of all the different areas that photography encompasses, my own interests fall within street photography and landscape. Both are areas that you have little influence over what is happening.

Film and digital

No, it’s not a debate about one being better than the other. As far as I am concerned shoot both and enjoy them both. We are lucky that we still can. One thing I have noticed of late is that even though I take both film and digital with me when I go out. The film camera is staying in the bag more and more. Partly, this is because I don’t have enough time to process and scan film nowadays, but also because the little Fuji’s are just so much fun to use. They have very fast and accurate in its focussing. However, I do love the look of film, so I need to have a think about how better to work these two approaches together better. Tricky.

Evening light

I went for a short walk this evening in the fields near to where I live. I just managed to catch the end of the sunset. As I was just out for a walk I didn’t really have the time to set up a thoughtfully composed image. However, I like the resulting panoramic all the same as the sky was very dramatic after a day of rain (click on image for larger version).

People who have been following my blog for a while will know that I like to do black and white street photography at night. Whilst it’s obviously been nice to have the light evenings of summer, there is a lot of me looking forward to the dark nights again. Well, for street photography at least.
